Black vs. Green eco SMART Flux

Black Flux

Harris eco SMART black flux is a high-heat formulation designed for extended heating cycles and demanding brazing conditions. It is particularly useful where prolonged or localized heating is encountered.

Green Flux

Harris eco SMART green flux incorporates color-change technology. During heating, the flux changes from green toward clear as brazing temperature is reached, helping the operator recognize the active brazing range.

Paste vs. Powder

Paste Flux

Paste formulations provide convenient direct application to the joint or base metal and offer smooth coverage for general brazing work.

Powder Flux

Powder formulations can be used for hot-rodding by dipping the heated end of brazing filler metal into the flux. Depending on the application, powder may also be mixed with water or alcohol to create a paste.

Typical Brazing Applications

Joining Applications

  • HVAC and refrigeration brazing
  • Industrial fabrication
  • Maintenance and repair
  • Process equipment
  • Copper and brass assemblies
  • Stainless and nickel-alloy brazing

Brazing Methods

  • Flame brazing
  • Induction brazing
  • Furnace brazing where appropriate
  • Manual brazing applications

Product Selection Considerations

Select the Formulation

Choose black or green flux based on the brazing process, heating cycle, filler metal and applicable brazing procedure. Green formulations provide a visible color-change indication during heating.

Select Paste or Powder

Choose paste for convenient joint application or powder when hot-rodding, dipping or custom flux preparation is preferred.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Harris eco SMART brazing flux?

eco SMART is Harris's boric-acid-free brazing flux family designed to dissolve oxides, protect the base metal during heating and promote brazing filler-metal flow.

What is the difference between black and green eco SMART flux?

Black eco SMART is designed for demanding high-heat brazing applications and extended heating cycles. Green eco SMART incorporates color-change technology that helps indicate when the flux has reached its active brazing temperature.

Should I choose paste or powder flux?

Paste provides convenient direct application to the brazing joint. Powder can be used for hot-rodding or mixed with a suitable liquid when a paste-like consistency is desired.

What metals can eco SMART flux be used on?

Depending on the selected formulation and brazing procedure, eco SMART flux is suitable for metals including copper, brass, bronze, steel, stainless steel, nickel and Monel®.

Can eco SMART flux be used with Harris Stay-Silv and Safety-Silv alloys?

Yes. Harris identifies eco SMART formulations for use with compatible Stay-Silv®, Safety-Silv® and other suitable brazing filler metals.

Does eco SMART contain boric acid?

No. Harris developed eco SMART formulations without boric acid or sodium-borate salts.

How is this product sold?

Each GetPipe.com quantity represents one jar of the selected Harris eco SMART formulation and package size.

Should brazing flux residue be removed after brazing?

Yes. Follow Harris instructions and the applicable brazing procedure for proper removal of flux residue after the joint has cooled sufficiently.
