Flange Adapter Design
A stainless press flange adapter provides a press connection on the piping side and a flange connection on the opposite end.
The press end connects to compatible Schedule 5 or Schedule 10 stainless steel pipe using approved Merit Stainless Press tooling. The flange end connects to a compatible mating flange using the appropriate gasket, bolting, and flange installation procedure.
This configuration provides a direct transition from stainless press piping to flanged valves, pumps, equipment, and other system components.
Why Choose a Press Flange Adapter?
Press-to-Flange Transition
- Connects stainless press piping to flanged components
- Useful for valves, pumps, and equipment
- Provides a serviceable bolted flange connection
- Combines press and flange connection methods
- Can reduce the need for additional transition fittings
Mechanical Press Installation
- Uses compatible press tooling on the pipe side
- No pipe threading required at the press connection
- No fitting weld required at the press connection
- Supports repeatable mechanical connections
- Designed for compatible stainless steel piping systems
Fixed Flange vs. Van Stone Flange Adapter
Fixed Flange Adapter
- Flange is fixed to the fitting body
- Bolt-hole orientation must be considered during installation
- Provides a direct press-to-flange transition
- Suitable where fixed flange orientation is acceptable
- This product configuration
Van Stone Flange Adapter
- Uses a rotating flange arrangement
- Allows bolt-hole alignment after pipe positioning
- Useful where additional alignment flexibility is required
- Provides the same general press-to-flange function
- Different flange arrangement from this adapter
Compatible Stainless Steel Pipe
304 / 304L Stainless Steel
- Compatible pipe material identified by Merit
- Schedule 5 or Schedule 10 pipe
- Pipe must conform to ASTM A-312
- Verify pipe dimensions and condition before installation
- Confirm chemical compatibility for the intended media
316 / 316L Stainless Steel
- Compatible pipe material identified by Merit
- Schedule 5 or Schedule 10 pipe
- Pipe must conform to ASTM A-312
- Suitable where the specified system requires 316/316L pipe
- Confirm chemical compatibility for the intended media
Pressure Range
Merit states that its Stainless Steel Press Fittings have a working pressure range from full vacuum to 300 PSI (20.7 bar) when used on compatible Schedule 5 or Schedule 10 stainless steel pipe.
Final system suitability also depends on the selected flange class, mating flange, gasket, bolting, operating temperature, conveyed media, and other application requirements.

Installation & Selection Guidance
- Confirm the required nominal press and flange size before ordering.
- Verify the required flange class and dimensional pattern.
- Use only compatible Schedule 5 or Schedule 10 stainless steel pipe on the press connection.
- Confirm pipe is Type 304/304L or 316/316L stainless steel as required.
- Verify that the stainless steel pipe conforms to ASTM A-312.
- Inspect and properly prepare the pipe end before installation.
- Insert the pipe to the required depth before pressing.
- Use compatible press tooling approved for the Merit Stainless Press system.
- Align the fixed flange bolt pattern before completing installation.
- Use the correct gasket for the mating flange, media, pressure, and temperature.
- Use appropriate flange bolting and tighten according to applicable installation requirements.
- Avoid using flange bolts to pull misaligned piping into position.
- Support connected piping and equipment to prevent excessive load on the adapter.
- Confirm system media compatibility using the Merit chemical compatibility chart.
- Verify that the fitting, flange, gasket, and bolting are suitable for the intended service.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a stainless press flange adapter used for?
It is used to transition compatible stainless steel press piping to a bolted flange connection for valves, pumps, equipment, and other flanged components.
What type of connections does this adapter have?
The adapter has a stainless press connection on one end and a fixed flange connection on the other.
How is this different from a Van Stone flange adapter?
This adapter uses a fixed flange. A Van Stone flange adapter uses a rotating flange arrangement that allows bolt-hole alignment after pipe positioning.
What pipe is this adapter designed for?
Merit identifies the Stainless Press system for Schedule 5 or Schedule 10 Type 304/304L or 316/316L stainless steel pipe conforming to ASTM A-312.
What is the stated working pressure range?
The supplied Merit information states a working pressure range from full vacuum to 300 PSI (20.7 bar) on compatible Schedule 5 and Schedule 10 stainless steel pipe.
Does the press side require welding?
No. The press side is mechanically connected to compatible stainless steel pipe using appropriate Merit Stainless Press tooling.
Does the flange connection require a gasket?
A compatible gasket is generally required between mating flange faces and should be selected based on flange type, media, pressure, and temperature.
