Surface Preparation Before Joining

CLEANER-65 is designed to remove dirt, oil, and grease from compatible pipe and fitting bonding surfaces before the priming and solvent-cement joining process begins.

Cleaning the surfaces helps provide a properly prepared area for the appropriate primer and solvent cement, while also removing contaminants that may otherwise interfere with the joining procedure.

PVC, CPVC, ABS & Styrene Compatibility

CLEANER-65 is a general-purpose cleaner for PVC, CPVC, ABS, and Styrene pipe and fittings, making it useful when several compatible thermoplastic piping materials are handled on the same project.

The cleaner is suitable for all sizes, classes, and schedules of these materials, eliminating the need to select the cleaner according to the nominal pipe size or schedule.

Use Before Primer or One-Step Cement

CLEANER-65 is excellent for cleaning compatible pipe and fitting surfaces before applying the appropriate primer and can also be used before an approved one-step cement where primer is not required.

It is important to remember that CLEANER-65 is a cleaner only. It does not soften the joining surfaces like a primer and does not replace the solvent cement required to create the finished connection.

Cleaner Only — Not a Primer or Cement

CLEANER-65 should be treated strictly as a surface-cleaning product. Where the selected piping system requires primer, the correct primer must still be applied after cleaning, followed by the appropriate solvent cement.

Always follow the joining requirements for the specific PVC, CPVC, ABS, or Styrene system because primer and solvent-cement requirements can differ according to the material, application, and selected cement.

Installation & Selection Considerations

  • Use as a cleaner only.
  • Keep the container tightly sealed.
  • Confirm the piping material before use.
  • Remove visible dirt, oil, and grease from bonding surfaces.
  • Use the appropriate primer and solvent cement required for the selected piping system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CLEANER-65 used for?

CLEANER-65 is used to remove dirt, oil, and grease from compatible plastic pipe and fitting bonding surfaces before priming or solvent-cement joining.

What materials can CLEANER-65 be used with?

Spears® CLEANER-65 is suitable for compatible PVC, CPVC, ABS, and Styrene pipe and fittings.

What sizes can CLEANER-65 be used with?

CLEANER-65 is a general-purpose cleaner suitable for all sizes, classes, and schedules of PVC, CPVC, ABS, and Styrene pipe and fittings.

Is CLEANER-65 a primer?

No. CLEANER-65 is a cleaner only. When the piping system requires primer, the appropriate primer must still be applied after the surfaces have been cleaned.

Is CLEANER-65 a solvent cement?

No. CLEANER-65 does not replace solvent cement. The correct solvent cement must be selected and applied according to the requirements of the piping material and system.

Can CLEANER-65 be used before one-step cement?

Yes. Spears® identifies CLEANER-65 as suitable for cleaning pipe before the use of an approved one-step cement that does not require primer.
