Description

Weld Backing / Chill Rings

Weld Backing / Chill Rings are designed to simplify pipe fit-up, improve weld quality, and ensure proper alignment during welding operations. Available in both Carbon Steel and 316L Stainless Steel, these rings provide a dependable solution for pipe, tube, fitting, and valve installations requiring full penetration welds and precise joint alignment.

Robvon Commercial Backing Rings are engineered to promote complete weld penetration, minimize weld defects, and help produce radiograph-quality welds. Their patented design improves fit-up efficiency while reducing the need for tack welding and preventing internal weld obstructions.

Key Features

  • Available in Carbon Steel and 316L Stainless Steel
  • Carbon steel material conforms to ASTM A109 and ASME A414 requirements
  • Designed for quick and accurate joint alignment
  • Patented spacer nubs automatically establish weld gap spacing
  • Supports complete weld penetration and fusion
  • Helps achieve radiograph-quality welds
  • Eliminates the need for tack welding in many applications
  • Internal bevels and flat lands minimize flow restrictions
  • Reduces risk of slag, icicles, and internal bore obstructions
  • Available for Schedule 40 pipe with additional schedules available upon request

Robvon "CCC" Backing Ring Design

Robvon "CCC" Backing Rings are designed for quick and easy alignment where variation in pipe inside diameters may be significant. The patented spacer nub design automatically establishes the proper root-pass weld gap while helping maintain precise fit-up throughout the welding process.

Internal bevels and flat inner lands help maintain unrestricted flow while reducing turbulence and minimizing the possibility of internal weld projections that could damage valves, strainers, or other downstream equipment.

Backing Ring Welding Procedure

The backing ring is inserted into the beveled pipe end with spacer nubs positioned against the pipe land. The adjoining pipe is then placed against the spacer nub to establish proper weld spacing. Depending on the ring style selected, the spacer nubs may either remain in place or be removed during welding.

During welding, heat expansion helps force the ring tightly against the pipe interior, eliminating gaps or crevices while promoting complete weld penetration. Weld metal should penetrate approximately 40% to 50% into the backing ring cross section to create an integral welded joint.

To ensure optimum weld quality, starts and stops of the weld deposit at the "CC" locations should be avoided during the root pass.

Important Notes

Prices shown are based on Schedule 40 pipe. Schedule 10 and Schedule 80 pipe configurations are available by special request.

Backing rings 14" and larger require fabrication and typically have lead times of approximately 2 to 4 weeks.

Ring gaps are generally 3/32" or .030" on sizes 4" and smaller, while sizes 5" and larger typically utilize a 1/8" or .040" gap.

All rings are marked with size, schedule, heat number, material grade, and Robvon company identification for traceability.
