Pipe End Closure

The weld cap is designed to close the end of a compatible aluminum pipe run. Its weld connection allows the cap to become part of the fabricated piping assembly, providing an end closure without the use of a threaded or mechanical connection.

6061-T6 Aluminum Technical Properties

T6 temper 6061 aluminum has an ultimate tensile strength of at least 42,000 psi (300 MPa) and a yield strength of at least 35,000 psi (241 MPa). More typical values are approximately 45,000 psi (310 MPa) ultimate tensile strength and 40,000 psi (275 MPa) yield strength.

In material thicknesses of 0.250 inch (6.35 mm) or less, elongation is 8% or more. In thicker sections, elongation is approximately 10%. T651 temper has similar mechanical properties.

The typical thermal conductivity of 6061-T6 aluminum at 80°C is approximately 152 W/m K.

Fatigue Performance

A referenced material data sheet defines the fatigue limit under cyclic loading as 14,000 psi (100 MPa) for 500,000,000 completely reversed cycles using a standard RR Moore test machine and specimen.

Aluminum does not exhibit a clearly defined “knee” on its S-N fatigue curve, so the number of cycles considered equivalent to “infinite life” can vary by design approach and application.

The actual fatigue limit in service can also be substantially affected by conventional de-rating factors, including loading conditions, stress gradients, and surface finish. These values should therefore be treated as material-reference data rather than a direct prediction of service life for a specific piping installation.

Schedule 40 & Schedule 80 Options

Schedule 40

Schedule 40 configurations are available for aluminum piping systems using compatible Schedule 40 pipe dimensions and wall thicknesses.

Schedule 80

Schedule 80 configurations are available for piping systems requiring compatibility with Schedule 80 aluminum pipe dimensions and wall thicknesses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What material are these weld caps made from?

These weld caps are manufactured from 6061-T6 aluminum.

What schedules are available?

The caps are available in Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 configurations.

Are these aluminum caps seamless?

Yes. These aluminum weld caps are identified as seamless.

What is an aluminum weld cap used for?

An aluminum weld cap is used to close the end of a compatible aluminum pipe run as part of a welded piping assembly.

What are the tensile and yield strengths of 6061-T6 aluminum?

The original material information lists a minimum ultimate tensile strength of 42,000 psi (300 MPa) and minimum yield strength of 35,000 psi (241 MPa). Typical values are approximately 45,000 psi and 40,000 psi, respectively.

What elongation is listed for 6061-T6 aluminum?

For thicknesses of 0.250" (6.35 mm) or less, elongation is listed as 8% or more. In thicker sections, elongation is approximately 10%.

What thermal conductivity is listed for 6061-T6?

The original technical information gives a typical thermal conductivity of approximately 152 W/m K at 80°C.

What fatigue-limit information is provided?

The referenced material data lists a fatigue limit of 14,000 psi (100 MPa) for 500,000,000 completely reversed cycles under the stated RR Moore test conditions. Actual application performance can vary with loading, stress gradients, surface finish, and other factors.
