Description

SCI® Press - Copper Coupling No Stop

SCI® Press - Copper Coupling No Stop is a straight Press x Press coupling designed to join compatible copper tubing without an internal tube stop, allowing the fitting to slide along the tubing during installation.

Identified by SCI as Fig. SP605, this fitting is cataloged as SP605 CU P X P NO STOP CPLG. The no-stop configuration is especially useful for repair work and installations where the coupling must slide completely over one tube before being repositioned across the completed joint.

Construction Details

The SCI® Press Copper Coupling No Stop is identified as Fig. SP605 and uses a straight Press x Press configuration for connecting compatible copper tubing.

Unlike SCI's standard SP604 coupling with stop, the SP605 does not incorporate an internal tube stop. This allows the coupling to move farther along the copper tubing during positioning rather than automatically stopping the tube at a fixed center location.

The fitting is manufactured as part of the SCI Press Copper system using copper alloy conforming to UNS C12200. Its press connections use Grade “E” peroxide-cured EPDM sealing elements.

Important: SCI states that fluids containing hydrocarbon-based oils are not compatible with the EPDM seal and that SCI Press Copper EPDM fittings are not for use in petroleum applications.

No-Stop Coupling Configuration

Press x Press Connection

Both ends of the SP605 provide SCI Press connections for joining compatible copper tubing in a straight in-line configuration.

No Internal Stop

The absence of an internal tube stop allows the coupling to slide along properly prepared copper tubing, providing additional positioning flexibility during assembly and repair work.

Designed for Repair & In-Line Connections

The no-stop design is particularly useful when joining existing copper piping where the surrounding tube cannot be easily moved apart to install a conventional coupling.

The SP605 can be positioned completely onto one properly prepared tube end, the adjoining tube can be aligned, and the coupling can then be repositioned across the joint before both press connections are completed.

Because there is no internal stop to establish insertion position automatically, careful measuring, marking, alignment, and tube insertion are especially important when installing a no-stop coupling.

SP605 No Stop vs. SP604 Coupling with Stop

SP605 Coupling No Stop

The SP605 has no internal tube stop, allowing the fitting to slide along the copper tubing. This configuration is useful for repair work and other installations requiring additional positioning flexibility.

SP604 Coupling with Stop

The SP604 is SCI's standard Copper Coupling with Stop. Its internal stop helps position the adjoining copper tube ends within the coupling during normal straight-through installations.

Standard vs. Extended No-Stop Coupling

SP605 Coupling No Stop

The SP605 is SCI's standard-length Press x Press No Stop Coupling for straight copper piping connections.

SP605L Extended Coupling No Stop

SCI separately identifies the SP605L as its Copper Extended Coupling No Stop. Select the appropriate configuration for the piping repair or installation requirements.

SCI® Press Copper Connection

SCI Press Technology provides a mechanical copper piping connection that eliminates the need for conventional soldering or brazing at the press joints.

SCI Press Copper Fittings are intended for use with ASTM B88 Types K, L, and M hard copper tubing and applicable soft copper tubing within the SCI Press Copper system.

The SCI Press Copper system is compatible with common pressing tools and jaws. SCI also states that fittings may be installed above and below ground where permitted by applicable local building codes.

EPDM Sealing System

The SCI Press Copper system uses peroxide-cured Grade “E” EPDM sealing elements. SCI lists an operating temperature range of -20°F to 248°F for the EPDM sealing material.

The EPDM seal is recommended by SCI for water service, diluted acids, alkaline solutions, oil-free air, and many other compatible chemical services.

Fluids containing hydrocarbon-based oils are not compatible with the EPDM seal. Do not use SCI Press Copper EPDM fittings in petroleum applications.

Approvals & Certifications

IAPMO UPC PS-117

SCI identifies its Press Copper fitting system with IAPMO UPC PS-117 approval.

The SCI Press Copper fitting system carries NSF/ANSI 61 certification for applicable drinking-water applications.

NSF/ANSI 372

SCI also identifies NSF/ANSI 372 certification for its Press Copper fitting system.

Typical Applications

Plumbing & Mechanical Systems

  • Potable water piping systems
  • Commercial plumbing
  • Residential plumbing
  • Mechanical copper piping
  • Straight copper tube connections

Repair & Retrofit Work

  • Existing copper piping repairs
  • In-line tube replacement
  • Retrofit piping installations
  • Connections where tube movement is limited
  • Installations requiring a sliding coupling

Installation & Selection Considerations

  • Confirm that the SP605 No Stop Coupling is the correct configuration for the intended installation rather than the SP604 Coupling with Stop or SP605L Extended Coupling No Stop.
  • Verify that the copper tubing complies with ASTM B88 and is compatible with the selected SCI Press fitting.
  • Because the SP605 has no internal stop, carefully measure and mark the required insertion position before pressing the connections.
  • Prepare, align, insert, and press both copper tube ends according to the supplied SCI Press installation instructions using compatible tools and jaws.
  • Verify fluid, pressure, temperature, and EPDM compatibility before placing the completed system into service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SCI figure number for the Copper Coupling No Stop?

SCI identifies the Copper Coupling No Stop as Fig. SP605.

What is the SCI catalog configuration for the SP605?

SCI catalogs the fitting as SP605 CU P X P NO STOP CPLG.

What connections does the SP605 use?

The SP605 uses a straight Press x Press configuration for joining compatible copper tubing.

What does “No Stop” mean?

No Stop means the coupling does not have the internal tube stop used to establish a fixed center position in a conventional coupling. This allows the SP605 to slide along compatible copper tubing during positioning.

Why would I use a no-stop coupling?

A no-stop coupling is useful for repair and retrofit work where the coupling needs to slide completely onto one tube before being repositioned across the adjoining tube ends.

How is the SP605 different from the SP604?

The SP605 is the Copper Coupling No Stop. The SP604 is SCI's Copper Coupling with Stop and includes an internal stop for tube positioning.

What is the SP605L?

The SP605L is SCI's Copper Extended Coupling No Stop. It is a separate extended no-stop coupling configuration.

Does the SP605 require soldering or brazing?

No. SCI Press Technology uses mechanical press connections, eliminating conventional soldering or brazing at the press joints.

Why is insertion marking especially important with a no-stop coupling?

Because there is no internal tube stop to establish the tube position automatically, the installer must carefully measure and mark the tubing so the coupling is properly centered and both tube ends achieve the required insertion before pressing.

What sealing material is used in the SCI Press Copper system?

SCI specifies peroxide-cured Grade “E” EPDM sealing elements with an operating temperature range of -20°F to 248°F.

Can SCI Press Copper EPDM fittings be used for petroleum applications?

No. SCI states that fluids containing hydrocarbon-based oils are not compatible with the EPDM seal and that these fittings are not for use in petroleum applications.
