Construction Details

The SCI® Press Copper 90° FPT Female Elbow is manufactured from copper alloy conforming to UNS C12200. Its 90-degree body combines an SCI Press connection on one side with a female threaded connection on the other.

The press connection incorporates a Grade “E” peroxide-cured EPDM sealing element with silicone grease. SCI specifies an operating temperature range of -20°F to 248°F for the EPDM sealing material.

This combination allows compatible ASTM B88 copper tubing to transition to a threaded component without requiring a separate press adapter and elbow at the same connection point.

Important: SCI states that fluids containing hydrocarbon-based oils are not compatible with the EPDM seal and that the SCI Press Copper EPDM system is not for use in petroleum applications.

90° Press-to-Female Threaded Configuration

SCI Press Connection

One end of the SP698 accepts compatible copper tubing and is joined using the SCI Press mechanical connection method with an appropriate pressing tool and jaw.

Female Threaded Connection

The opposite end provides a female threaded connection for transitioning to a compatible male threaded pipe, valve, equipment connection, or other threaded component while turning the piping run 90 degrees.

Threaded Transition at a 90° Turn

The SP698 combines two functions in a single fitting: a 90-degree directional change and a transition from SCI Press copper piping to a female threaded connection.

This configuration can simplify installations where copper tubing must terminate at or connect to a threaded valve, equipment connection, instrument, or other compatible male threaded component.

Using an integrated press-to-threaded elbow can also reduce the need for a separate straight threaded adapter and additional elbow in locations where both the connection transition and directional change are required.

SCI® Press Copper Connection

SCI Press Technology provides a mechanical copper piping connection that eliminates the need for conventional soldering or brazing at the press joint. SCI states that the system is compatible with common pressing tools and jaws.

SCI Press Copper Fittings are intended for use with ASTM B88 Types K, L, and M hard copper tubing from 1/2" through 4" and soft copper tubing from 1/2" through 1-1/4" within the applicable SCI Press fitting range.

SCI states that its Press Copper fittings are approved for installations above and below ground where permitted by applicable local building codes.

ASTM B88 Copper Tubing Compatibility

Hard Copper Tubing

The SCI Press Copper system is intended for use with ASTM B88 Types K, L, and M hard copper tubing in compatible SCI Press system sizes.

Soft Copper Tubing

SCI also specifies compatibility with ASTM B88 soft copper tubing in applicable system sizes. Confirm the specific fitting and tubing combination before installation.

EPDM Sealing Element

The press connection in the SCI Press Copper system uses a peroxide-cured Grade “E” EPDM O-ring. SCI lists an operating temperature range of -20°F to 248°F for this sealing material.

SCI recommends the EPDM seal for water service, diluted acids, alkaline solutions, oil-free air, and many other compatible chemical services.

Fluids containing hydrocarbon-based oils are not compatible with the EPDM seal. Do not use SCI Press Copper EPDM fittings in petroleum applications.
